Eyebrows were raised when Wilson's Neon Flare was named the official ball at the US Open. A bizarre choice since it will not be a USAPA approved ball after October 1.2016! Wilson ran into production delays which, perhaps, they wish had gone on indefinitely because the reviews of the ball were devastating. While people all over the continent praised the ball for it's visibility, they quickly discovered it had another unique feature: with just a little hard hitting, it lost its shape and became "out of round" almost immediately.
In the wake of the widespread criticism and with just a few weeks before opening day, tournament organizers issued a statement to all US Open players saying that the Neon Flare would be scrapped as the tournament ball and would be replaced by the tried and true Durafast 40 (not made by Wilson). The quality of the ball was not cited as the reason for the change but rather "sourcing concerns" that Wilson had.
